Steve's Biography

Steve Roberson is an acoustic singer, songwriter and instrumentalist from Holliston, Massachusetts. Steve has been a professional musician for most of his life, from his beginnings as a serious classical guitarist, through years as lead guitarist with a wide variety of musical groups—playing chamber jazz, acoustic folk and blues, electric rock and roll—in venues from New York to Boston, and from the Berkshire Hills to the fjords of Norway. Since 1994 he has also played lead guitar, mandolin and vocals with the acoustic-based band Pt73, which released one CD (Radio Showers, American Music Group), embarked on two successful Scandinavian tours, and maintained an active performing schedule at clubs and private functions throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

As a solo performer and songwriter, Steve draws on historical themes, current events, and personal experiences, in styles ranging from traditional Appalachian, Celtic and Piedmont blues, as well as Scandinavian, Brazilian, West African, Elizabethan and Renaissance styles. His songwriting influences are equally varied, including Bob Dylan, Richard Thompson, Norman Blake, John Renbourn, John Prine, and other bright lights of the American and English folk scenes. In solo performance, Steve places a priority on connecting with the audience in a shared musical experience that is fun, varied, and engaging. His music relies on inventive arrangements and skillful musicianship to create a sound that is more fully realized than one expects from a single performer, condensing complex arrangements down to one voice and guitar without compromising the musical depth and sophistication of the song. He plays original songs alongside adaptations of established material, giving the audience a taste of something new, while also bringing new life to familiar sounds.

In September 2003, Steve was honored as one of three winners of the Boston Folk Festival's first annual Songwriting Contest for his song Cold Harbor. A Civil War tale, the song tells the story of the Battle of Cold Harbor, which took place in June 1864 in the small crossroads town of Cold Harbor, Virginia. The battle pitted the Grand Army of the Republic, commanded by Ulysses S. Grant, against the Army of Northern Virginia, commanded by Robert E. Lee. The battle was a Confederate victory, and is said to be the only assault that Grant ever regretted ordering. Steve's song tells the story from the vantage point of a young Confederate soldier who had just come of age and joined the army in the field in time for the battle. The song depicts how war, even for the victors, is a harrowing and tragic experience.

In October 2003, Steve released his first solo CD, entitled Whistle Stop Town. The CD, which contains twelve original songs (including the prizewinning song Cold Harbor), is the second disc to be recorded in Holliston at Steve's home studio (dubbed Back At The Ranch Studio), and released by Steve's production company, Whistle Stop Productions.
